Your Symptoms - Sleep Disorder?

These are the common conditions where HomeSleep is recommended:

- Snoring
- Periodic snoring with breathing pauses, Sleep Apnea
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
- Insomnia, restless sleep

Sleep disorders are very common. Most often the medical diagnosis is based on the patient history.

Especially in organic sleep disorders the all-night sleep study is often necessary. There are different types of sleep studies, sleep recordings. The complete sleep polysomnography (PSG) is performed in the sleep laboratory. It is an expensive study with several measure channels and even video recording. A home recording (ambulatory sleep recording) is possible in e.g. Sleep Apnea or Restless Legs Syndrome. Most often these recordings are performed for a single night.

HomeSleep is a very simple sleep study. It is not as accurate as PSG. It uses a very sensitive microphone to detect snoring or leg movements to obtain same information as PSG. It may be performed at home during several successive nights in the “most natural” environment. This is the real advantage of HomeSleep. The sleep doctors always recommend repeated recordings.

Snoring every night or almost every night is present in 5-10% in adults and certainly in more than 10% in obese men. Typically continuous snoring is disturbing spouse but it is not otherwise dangerous as a medical problem. The simple method to avoid snoring is to avoid sleeping supine (on the back). Most often losing of some weight is helpful. There are numerous other ways to help snoring - including operations! Your doctor knows these possibilities.

Periodic snoring with pauses in breathing is typical for Sleep Apnea. Everybody may have some single breathing pauses, apneas, during sleep. In Sleep Apnea Syndrome there may be hundreds of breathing pauses during one night. Typically there are periods of loud snoring and then pauses in snoring due to apneas. Sleep Apnea causes fragmentation of sleep and a poor quality of sleep. Therefore Sleep Apnea patients are typically tired during day-time. Breathing pauses are also a risk factor for your heart, brain, elevated blood pressure and lung functions. Treatments for Sleep Apnea help both the risk factors and the tiredness. All Sleep Apnea patients do not have loud snoring and therefore the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea always is based on polysomnography.

Leg and body movements during sleep are a sign of poor and fragmented sleep. They are typical in insomnia of various origins. Insomnia in the evening is a disorder to initiate sleep. Insomnia during morning hours and long lasting insomnia are stressful conditions associated also with depression. There are numerous ways to treat insomnia - also other than sleep pills!

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a night time condition with unpleasant feelings in your legs. Typically it is most severe during first hours of sleep. The unpleasant feelings (pain, tingling, cramp, tension) cause you a pressure to move the legs. It helps for a while but after some seconds or minutes you have to move them again. Your legs are really restless. This makes sleeping and falling to sleep really difficult. If you have Restless Legs later during night hours you may not notice the movements. Your spouse may tell that you kicked and moved the legs. These movements make the sleep fragmented and you may feel tired. Sometimes RLS is so severe that it is a reason to treat with some drugs. There are several effective drug treatments used in the evening. After the screening it is a good idea to see that the drugs really help. It is simple to make repeated monitoring or follow-up screening with HomeSleep.
