1. Do I have a suitable MP3- recorder or Nokia mobile phone for HomeSleep?

It is easy to test your MP3 recorder. Several cheap MP3 players/recorders are suited for the recording. Read the instructions of you MP3 player. Perform a test recording e.g. for 10 minutes. Download HomeSleep software. Connect your MP3 device to your PC. Start HomeSleep program and try to read in the data. If you get a short recording to the screen of the computer you may perform an all-night recording. Remember to charge or change the battery.

The mobile phone is not sending any messages or causing any radiation during the recording. Therefore it is totally safe to have it near to you during night time.

3. What are the real risks of snoring and sleep apnea

Sleep medicine research has very much studied these risks. While snoring is mainly a social problem sleep apnea is more a risk factor for several medical conditions (metabolic syndrome, blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and even stroke). You may read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

4. I have some mild symptoms of restless legs. What should I do?

In mild forms of restless legs syndrome (RLS) most often no drug treatment is needed. You could, however, ask your physician to check the hemoglobin (blood iron). More information is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restless_legs_syndrome .

If the symptoms are severe and disturbing your sleep you could make HomeSleep Sleeprecording during several nights to see if the number of movements and periodic movements is higher when the symptoms are worse. This would be important for the possible medical treatment.

5. I have used sleeping pills for several years. Is it really possible to sleep without them?

The effect of most common sleeping medication diminish during the long use. Most certainly your sleep could be similar or even better without sleeping pills. 6. Is it possible to calibrate the HomeSleep snoring noise measurement and analysis?

The intensity of the snoring depends very much on the distance between the microphone and the snoring sleeping human mouth and throat. Typically the snoring noise is lasting several seconds with pauses during expiration. The periodic snoring means heavy snores for e.g. 10-30 seconds and thereafter a pause of 20-50 seconds. This is typically caused by the sleep apnea, breathing pause.

You may, however,  start the recording in the evening by talking or even snoring when the measurement device already is its position. In the morning it is possible to compare the noise level during the first minutes of voluntary noise and snoring to the night time voices. Most probably the automatic HomeSleep analysis is marking the first minutes as snoring (blue) or heavy snoring (yellow) line.

7. My husband is tired and he is snoring a lot. Should we try HomeSleep Sleeprecording.

Yes, after some all-night recordings you may know better what is going on during night-time. If there is a suspicion of sleep apnea you should visit you doctor in any case. There are sleep apnea patients with minimal or even no snoring. The treatments do help them a lot!

8. My doctor is suggesting polysomnography. Is it very important and a good study?

Polysomnography (PSG) is performed at sleep laboratory or at home. PSG is very important to get the real and accurate diagnosis of sleep disorders. HomeSleep Sleeprecording is a much simpler method but in some cases it is possible to get extra information after or before PSG by performing HomeSleep Sleeprecoring during several nights!
