Complete Analysis User Guide

NOTE: HomeSleep is a monitoring and screening tool for sleep and its disorders. It is not a medical tool for diagnosis of any disease. You may use HomeSleep to get more information about the sleep for you, for your doctor and sleep specialists. Especially, if you have any symptoms of any diseases you should visit your doctor!

1. ANALYSIS OF SNORING VOICES


The graphic output on the screen is the time period from SLEEP START to SLEEP END you gave to the software, e.g. 23:00 – 6:00.

The maximal duration of analysis is 9 hours.

The all night compressed graph is in upper part of the display using RED COLOR.

The part with WHITE background is visualized on the lower part of the screen (detailed graphs).

In the detailed graph the voice signal is in GREEN color. The significantly louder voice is indicated as BLUE color.

The duration of the detailed graph is adjusted using different buttons on the screen. In the beginning the detailed graph visualizes the total all-night recording and the default duration of every line on the detailed graphs is 60 minutes.

The detection level for the significant snoring voice (indicated in BLUE COLOR) is adjusted using LEVEL button. If you set the LEVEL higher the amount of the detected snoring goes downwards. If you set the LEVEL lower the analysis is more sensitive and finds more snoring. The default value of the detection level is 4 times the typical background noise level.

The overall amplification of the signals is adjusted using ZOOM button to higher or lower. This does not affect on the amount of the detected significant voice as snoring.


The duration of one line in the detailed lower graph is adjusted using MINUTES PER ROW button to see a compressed or more detailed view. The length of one line may be 2-5-10-20-30-40-50-60 minutes.

 

The selected part of the all-night recording is visualized in the upper compressed graph as WHITE background. The selected part of the display is adjusted using BROWSE adjustment (arrow symbols) for / backwards or to the start or end of the recording. The selection of the area visualized in details on the lower graph may be performed using mouse by clicking the compressed RED signal display in upper part of the screen.

The proper detection level for the significant voice signal is adjusted using LEVEL button and the significant snoring is marked in BLUE color.

The heavy, loud snoring voice is indicated with YELLOW horizontal line.

The continuous voice with periodic pauses is marked using RED color.

In the detailed graph (lower part of the screen) the minutes with at least 20% of snoring voices are marked with HORIZONTAL LINES.

The BLUE LINE is marking the minutes when there are significant voice signals like snoring more than 20% of the minute (Minutes with snoring, S).

The YELLLOW LINE is marking the minutes with heavy, loud snoring with higher intensity more than 20% of the minute (Minutes with heavy snoring, HS).

The RED LINE is marking the minutes with a more continuous voice with periodic pauses more than 20% of the minute. This may be some continuous voice due to movements or periodic snoring with periodic pauses due to apneas. They are indicated as minutes with periodic snoring (PS).

SNORING DETAILS - The left column of the display contains the numeric values of the detailed analysis of the snoring voices:

 

S: SNORING

= the detected significant voice signals during the all-night recording

- Seconds with snoring: the amount of the significant snoring voice in seconds

- Minutes with snoring: the minutes with more than 20% voice signals. These are marked with BLUE HORIZONTAL LINE in the graph

- Seconds %: the percentage of the snoring voices during the all-night recording

- Minutes %: the percentage of the minutes with more than 20% of snoring voices (is marked with BLUE HORIZONTAL LINE on the detailed graph)

HS: HEAVY SNORING

= the detected loud voice signals interpreted as heavy snoring during the all-night recording

- Seconds with HS: the amount of the significant heavy snoring voice in seconds

- Minutes with HS: the minutes with more than 20% heavy snoring signals, marked with YELLOW HORIZONTAL LINE in the graph

- Seconds %: the percentage of the heavy snoring voices during the all-night recording

- Minutes %: the percentage of the minutes with more than 20% of heavy snoring voices (is marked with YELLOW HORIZONTAL LINE on the detailed graph)

 

PS: PERIODIC SNORING

= the detected significant continuous voice signals with periodic pauses during the all-night recording. This may be periodic snoring or some other disturbance of the sleep. The PERIODIC SNORING is indicated with RED COLOR in the graph.

- Seconds with PS: the amount of the significant Periodic snoring voice in seconds, the signal with RED COLOR

- Minutes with PS: the minutes with more than 20% periodic voice signals, marked with RED HORIZONTAL LINE

- Seconds %: the percentage of the periodic snoring voices during the all-night recording

- Minutes %: the percentage of the minutes with more than 20% of perodic snoring voices (is marked with RED HORIZONTAL LINE on the detailed graph)

The amount of the detected voice signals is totally dependent on the adjustment of the detection level adjusted up or down with the LEVEL button

2. LEG MOVEMENTS, ANALYSIS OF PERIODIC MOVEMENTS, RESTLESS SLEEP

The graphic output on the screen is the time period from SLEEP START to SLEEP END you gave to the software, e.g. 23:00 – 6:00.

The duration of one line in lower graph is adjusted using MINUTES PER ROW button (2-60 minutes).

The automatic detection level is four times the median background level.

The significant leg movement events are marked with BLUE color. The silent time without movements is indicated with GREEN color..

The periodic leg movement is marked with BLUE horizontal line.

The periodic leg movements are indicated on the graph with RED HORIZNTAL LINES.

The periodic leg movements are typically associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS).

MOVEMENT DETAILS - The left column of the display contains the numeric values of the detailed analysis of the snoring voices:

MOVEMENTS - the detected voice signals of significant movements during the all-night recording are indicated with BLUE COLOR

- NUMBER: the number of the significant movements voice peaks

- AMOUNT: the total duration of the movements in seconds

 

PERIODIC MOVEMENTS are repetative, more or less regulatory occuring movements with pauses, indicated with RED HORISONTAL LINE

- NUMBER: the number of periodic movements

- AMOUNT: the amount of minutes with periodic movements, marked with RED HORIZONTAL LINE

-PLMI = Periodic Leg Movement Index : number of periodic leg movements per one hour. This index is frequently used to describe the degree of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

The number and amount of movements and periodic movements is dependent on the detection level for the significant movement voice. This may be adjusted using LEVEL button and is affecting both to the graph and to the numeric values.

3. LISTEN TO THE RECORDED SIGNALS AND PAPER PRINT-OUT OF THE RESULTS

PLAY

You may listen to the night time signals if the signals are recorded using a MP3 player/recorder. This is not possible if the stydy was performed using mobile phone.

Click (left click) with the mouse the point in the recording which you would like to listen to. This may be e.g. snoring sound spike, some other spike or movement voide event.

Point and push PLAY button. The recorded voice signal is played trough the loudspeaker of your PC. The yellow indicator tells you the location of the signal played. There might be some minor error (some seconds) between the indicator and the real voice!

Stop the replay of the signal using STOP button.

 

 


PRINT

 

You may get the paper print-out using PRINT button.

You may have both the graphs and the numerical report included.

The graph is more demonstrative if you set your printer output option to LANDSCAPE mode.

4. INTERPRETATION OF THE FINDINGS: WHAT DO THE RESULTS MEAN?

SNORING ANALYSIS

NOTE: The results of the recordings depends totally on the right and proper technique of the measurement:


The microphone has to be near to the sleeping subject and near to the face and mouth.

The microphones of different devices are always different in sensitivity.

All other noises in the measurement area are affecting the results.

You should never rely on single night recording but make repeated recordings during several nights. The sleeping position (supine, on the back?) affects this a lot!

The amount of the voices detected is never indication of some medical disorder or lack of some disorder!

The numeric values and important findings in the graphic output are indicated using different colors:


- GREEN color: background noise, normal breathing.


- BLUE color: snoring or some other sound which most probably is caused by snoring or loud breathing.


- YELLOW color: snoring or some other sound of higher volume, "heavy snoring".


- RED color: continuous periodic sound with periodic pauses between the sound periods.


This is visualized to indicate possible periodic snoring due to periodic breathing pauses and due to apneas. The red color events may also be other disturbing long duration voices like change of sleeping position.

BLUE:


The amount of snoring in minutes is describing the part of recording which is disturbed by snoring sound. Typically persons who do not snore at all have this value less than 10% of the recording.

YELLOW:


The amount of heavy snoring in minutes is normally less than 10% of the recording time.
If there is a lot of snoring the amount of BLUE and YELLOW may be more than 50% of the recording!

RED:


The periodic sound with periodic pauses is most often less than 10% of the total time of the recording.
In a typical case of sleep apnea there is a lot of snoring (BLUE and YELLOW) and the amount on periodic snoring (RED) is more than 10-20-% of the total time. The periodic snoring in this case is caused by the breathing pauses called apneas.
In case of a suspicion of sleep apnea the small amount of snoring, heavy snoring and periodic snoring does not exclude or ascertain that there is no sleep related breathing disorder like sleep apnea present.
There are sleep apnea cases with no snoring at all! The diagnosis should rely on medical consultation and medical knowledge of all data.

LEG MOVEMENTS ANALYSIS

The number of leg movements is typically less than 10 / hour. In 8 hour recording typically the number of movements is less than 80.
The number of periodic leg movements is typically less than 10/hour. This value is given as PLMI.
If there are a lot of periodic leg movements in the evening the sleeping subject may report the feeling of  restless legs.  If the sleep is disturbed by the restless legs the condition may be called restless legs syndrome.
In restless legs syndrome  PLMI is often more than 20 or 30. A repeated measurement of several nights is always a good idea.
The follow up of the treatment of restless legs syndrome is possible using repeated HomeSleep studies

The therapy and treatment of insomnia is not only sleeping pills. There are several method for relaxation, cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, yoga etc. to “learn” how to fall asleep.
